During the Roman attack on Syracuse, Archimedes reportedly supervised the employment of defensive machines, including artillery and ship-grappling cranes, that delayed the attackers. Ancient and modern chronologies variously place the opening major assault in 214 or 213 BC. Coordinates are a representative point for ancient Syracuse and its defenses, not a proven station occupied by Archimedes.
